5 Seeds by Tooheys Extra Dry

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Lion Nathan has launched a new addition to their Tooheys Extra Dry range, 5 Seeds.

5 Seeds

Have a guess what type of beer this actually is?  Cider!

5 Seeds has been produced by the same people that made the popular Tooheys Extra Dry brew which is reassuring to know.  It’s a medium cider reported to have slightly tangy apple characteristics coming through in both the flavour and aroma.  Real apple juice sourced from Braeburn apples is used in this cider to produce a very light coloured beverage that in appearance can be compared to white wine.  The aptly chosen name 5 Seeds, refers to when a perfect apple is cut in half across the core and in theory should reveal five seed chambers each with one seed in it.   I can’t say I’ve ever had a perfect apple but obviously the creators of this beer have.

Unfortunately I have yet to see this cider make an appearance at my local bottle store but I am optimistic it will be on the shelves shortly awaiting my review.  This is new territory for Lion Nathan so if you have already tried it, please post your comments below as we are all keen to know.

just got a 6 pack of the cider. $14.95 from my local 1st choice. first taste is refreshing. Stay tuned review coming soon

  2. Nikki says:

I tried this last weekend and looooved it. Not only did my local pub serve it to me each time with a nice cold pint size glass full of ice, there was a promotion going with scratchie cards and I won both the foldable ray-ban style sunglasses AND the funky visor. It’s a winner in my book.
Tastes very refreshing and by drinking it in the glass with ice, I kept hydrated, so not much of a hangover.

This is my new drink of choice!

  3. Nina says:

  10. Chris Norris says:

Hi! To Louise, I am coeliac and I have drunken a six pack in a night and no ill effects…..except a headache. No stomach ache, no fatigue, no bad tempers, no diarrhoea.

    YOU ARE FREE! :)

  11. Adam says:

I have had three cartons of 5 seeds over last few weeks and love it , but I would like to know the sugar and carb stats on it.

  12. Kirsty says:

  13. chris says:

great taste, more refreshing than beer sorry to say. Just started having them at work for afterwork drinks. Ive introduced a couple of beer drinkers to it also with a good rap!

  14. Brett says:

Well, I am trying this for the first time right now. I have had many ciders and this would have to be one of the most bland and boring ciders that I have had. Will not be buying again.

  15. corey says:

baught one yesterday on my lunch break , was very nice. will be buying a 6 pack later today .

  16. Frank says:

I just drank my first bottle and I’m starting on the second one ;) taste real good must try +++++

  17. claire says:

hey, is this like a beer with apple flavoring thrown in? because i’m not a beer drinker and i’m wondering does it have a very strong beer taste to it?
i’m trying to ween myself off the lolly drinks..is this a good start? ha

  18. Daniel says:

Hi Claire, 5 Seeds would be a great starting point to get off the ‘lolly drinks’. It’s technically a cider, so it has little to no beer taste so you don’t have to worry about that. Go get yourself a six-pack and let us know what you think, hopefully the next step will be beer ;-) Cheers.

  19. Gavin says:

Lion Nathan aye. Well, well done is all I can say. This is a very refreshing cider drink, best served cold or childed. Strongbow better watch their six :-) as this has real potential

  20. Burnngfeetman says:

5 seed is one of the worst ciders that I’ve ever had. I’m not too sure why the other posters here are giving it a good wrap. Personally I found it to have a cheap mass produced taste about it. Will be advising my mates against 5 seeds, and pointing them in the direction of a good Swedish import.

  21. Danica says:

Tried it a couple of weeks ago and Loved it so i got myself a six pack today drinking them!! dont usually drink beer or ceder but think this is great

  22. tracey says:

5 seeds is fantabulous never heard of it before til a mate got me on to it and i love it.
love the taste and how refreshing it is
    10/10 for me :)

  23. coral smith says:

I have just tried the 5 seeds cider as I am a bit of a cider fan.I thought it was fantastic , I enjoy the dry crisp finish when swallowed along with the smooth semi sweet taste taste. Bought a 6 mixed pack “Cider House” Xmas box so that I could try out new ones I have,nt heard of. Will need to buy a new one for xmas as I have already drank most of them. I will buy it for a friend of mine who loves cider too and for under $20 makes a good presant. Will go back to Saveway liquor if they stock it to buy some more 5 seeds as I have enjoyed it . I hope they do stock it as I will be frustrated if its not available! Cheers Coral Smith

  24. Jarrod says:

Never drank beer in my life, was always a rum drinker, my brother gave me. 1 of his 5 seeds, then i was hooked!!!!! Great tasting refreshment!!!!! And to the guy above not everyone is the same u old fuk, who cares if u dont like 5 seeds sook

  25. David says:

If your a cider drinker (Strongbow doesn’t count:) you’ll find it a little (very) bland and quite un-impressive.

If your not a beer drinker, and have never really gotten into cider either you’ll probably love it. Its got the refreshment of beer, without the hops that turns a lot of people off (myself included).

If you are a beer drinker and your preference is towards lighter beers (flavour not alcohol content) like Corona or wheat beers for instance – jump on in.

In my opinion, its better than no cider at all and better than Strongbow (if that even counts). I’ll drink it when its the only cider available, but that’s about it.

  26. John Hockey says:

A few comments above for those who think they are a bit better than us commoners. Especially the one just above. I suggest some of you are more excited about the image of the drink than the drink itself. If it makes you feel a bit better about yourself or lifts your standing in society, go ahead and pay twice as much as the rest of us for a cider. The rest of us will drink something if we like the taste of it. Good Luck to You All!

  27. Gangster Cunneen says:

Thank you Tooheys, I just love the taste of 5 Seeds Cider,
although all my boyfriends are beer drinkers, I have stood my ground and tried to change their tastes but to no avail.. Love you 5 Seeds…..Gangtser

  28. nick says:

i love the fact that most of the reviews are written by people trying to promote the product, drink genesis no preservatives

  29. Regula says:

we discovered 5 seeds cider in australia – an now, back in germany – we are desperately trying to get your beautiful cider in europe – is there a chance? and how and where??
    hoping for your answer!!
    Regula

  30. Bobz says:

Lived in Devon, UK for 10 years before Oz which is cider capital of the world. I’ve tried many but just love 5 seeds. So refreshing on a hot day. Not bloating like beer (although i love beer too!). Great drink and now on tap in a few of the local pubs. Not so keen on the new one though.

  31. Allan says:

Just tried one. NOTHING to write home about. Just shows what good marketing will convince you to try.

  32. Aaron says:

Could someone please advise about the quantity of Alcohal it contains.

  33. Daniel says:

    5% alcohol Aaron, cheers!

  34. Ken brown says:

Just had a 6pack of the clear 5 seeds all ok, but y can it be made in Australia.?? And it gets a bit too sweet at the end.

  35. Ken brown says:

I think it’s better than the other cider on the market.

  36. Lizzie says:

I am finding your advertisement very irritating because it is being played too often. It quite puts me off the drink.

  37. paul says:

this 5 seed cider is undoubtably the best cider i have ever had. it suits the australian climate and palate,,its very hot here mate you want something very refreshing. if you drink it very cold its delicious

  38. Jim says:

It is a little bland but I can see it will appear to the cross over drinkers. I will stick to my Montieths I think.

  39. dry cider drinker says:

Tried it a few times. Not a fan. Will stick to my strongbow dry thanks!
