Aussie beer consumption hits a record low!

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Official figures show that Australian beer consumption has dropped to a record 60 year low.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that around 4.49 litres of beer was consumed per person from June 2009 to date and this is the lowest on record since the early 1950′s.   Beer consumption peaked in 1979 at 6.4 litres of beer per person but has been in a steady decline ever since.  Some believe this is due to Australians becoming more choice driven in what beer they decide to drink, choosing quality over quantity.  I for one agree with this and know that since starting BeerAdvice  I have tried some unique and unforgettable brews which have enabled me to make a better decision when purchasing my next beer.  Others believe this decrease is due to the current economic climate.  What do you think?

Regardless of beer consumption hitting a record low in Australia I’m not the least bit worried.  I for one won’t be decreasing my consumption especially on a Friday and after a hard weeks work!
