Dry Dock Premium Lager

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Dry Dock Premium Lager has recently sailed its way onto the shelves of BWS and Dan Murphy’s stores nationally, having been officially released in October last year.  It was introduced by Woolworths who now owns 25% of the Cage Road Brewery in Fremantle.

It’s a premium lager that has been produced to compete directly with Tooheys Extra Dry.  First of all let’s get one thing straight, if I had to pick between Dry Dock and Extra Dry, Extra Dry would win hands down and I don’t hold Extra Dry with high regard so go figure.  At first glance I mistook Dry Dock for Carlton Dry.  The next thing I noticed was the price, $15 a six-pack which sounded reasonable for a new beer on the market, so I bought a pack.  I love to try new brews but unfortunately this one was a mistake.

It pours a pale yellow colour with a short little head and moderate carbonation.  There’s a faint sweet aroma but nothing that really stands out.  The taste is bland and watery which leaves me thinking “is that all?”  It’s not overly pleasant and to be honest I don’t believe it’s worth $15 a six-pack.  The strange thing is this is actually the second lager introduced by Woolworths, with the first being Platinum Blonde which I didn’t mind drinking.  You would think they’d improve things the second time round.

I love to recommend beers to others but you won’t see me recommending this one.  If you must try it for yourself wait till it’s on special, preferably $10 a six-pack or better yet wait for a party to happen and steal one off your mate if they’ve bought some.

  9. Tim says:

It’s OK for a full strength beer, prefer Cascade
    Lite

I don’t mind this lager. We get it $35 a carton. Well worth it I reckon.

I found this to be skunky, over-carbonated and hard to justify in a bottle. The bad advertising doesn’t help either!

On tap it’s a very different story though and a worthy session beer if stuck at a pub with the requisite fleet of prehistoric Australian mainstays.

No skunky aromas, maintains pleasant flavour as it warms up, lower carbonation than the bottle and you can drink it all day.

I’ve read it was designed to displace TEDs from the market – which it will do in a heartbeat. It’s a better version of TED designed for the modern palate – sales are proving this too.

The 1st few sips are off kilter, if you can survive till the 2nd beer its a good drop at a reasonable price, and i have to agree on tap it is tops!

    Thumbs up from me

this is the worst beer ive bought, firstly the carton had 1 stubbie missing, not a good start, then i thought the first beer was flat, but from the comments here, its as good as it gets. great if you like cheap flat beer then. hahah

    Hello Beer Lovers !

I bought a slab of Dry Dock last year – and all I can say is “WHAT A SHOCKER”! Tap Water has more taste. I’m a Perth boy (well now – after 43 years on the East Coast) – and I’m embarrassed that they bottle this stuff in Freo (which is where I work!). If your’e really desparate – try Tooheys Blue instead of this stuff – yep you heard me. This stuff is KRAP !

    I’ll give this Beer 0/10

massive aussie thumbs up from me!!

  18. Cam Langdon says:

Just tried it – not great, but after the first few … oh well :)

  19. Trevor says:

The only reason i buy it sometimes because its 34dollars a slab

  20. peter says:

Very Nice, Its like a corona takeoff and for the price it does it pretty well.

  21. Robert says:

I have drunk this since it came on the market. A great beer. Doesn’t bloat like lagers do. Very much like TED but cheaper albiet in a slightly smaller stubbie. Good refreshing beer that gives you a nice buzz (5.0%)

  22. dennis says:

Dan Murphy had this for $30 for 24, so I gave it a try, with no great expectations, which were met. If you don’t mind those bland tasteless “dry” beers, or (as peter says) Corona, you’ll find this okay. If you need depth or complexity in a beer, look elsewhere and be prepared to spend a lot more. Worth 3 stars for value.

  23. john says:

i have just purchased a slab of dry dock,my first beer out the box has a rejected lid.do you take a photo of it or send it in to the factory.I am asking this as my mates say you could get a few free beers to prove this defect from the factory. The bottle has still not been opened as nobody wanted to drink it.

  24. Daniel says:

    Wouldn’t hurt to try John

  25. Rusty says:

Atleast it is full strength unlike most Aussie beers. It is drinkable for a dry/bland beer. $30 Carton BWS.

  26. Ash says:

tried this at a mates place and one of the worst ones in the market. I would go for tooheys extra dry then this one.
