BeerAdvice.com.au would like to wish everyone a Happy & Safe St. Patrick’s Day!

So wherever you are enjoying this tradition we hope you are keeping things green and if that’s not possible then at least keep things Irish.
Here’s two Irish brews to read up about:
Kilkenny Irish Ale
Guinness Black Lager
Also if you happen to be at your local Guinness serving watering hole with an iPhone, then make sure to leave some feedback using the Guinness Blacklist App.
Have a great day all!

The Cascade Brewing Company have been busy of late in conjunction with the help of beer expert Matt Kirkegaard and creative company Droga5 creating a unique social/informative app for the iTunes store called The Brewer’s Nose.
The brilliant part about this app is that it allows you to simply scan the barcode from whatever beer you’re drinking with the help of the iPhone’s camera and then directs you to a page with information about that specific beer and best of all it actually works! I have tested myself with two different beers, first of which was the beer I last reviewed Fűrstenberg and secondly was Schöfferhofer which I am currently drinking, see below for the proof.

This new application features more than 500 local and international beers. It gives you a brief description of the scanned beverage along with a food matching service, as well as the ability to leave your own tasting notes which you can share with your friends on Facebook or Twitter. There’s also a ‘find’ feature that allows you to search for a nearby store, bar or pub.
Click here for a direct link to the app but you will need iTunes and an iPhone to make use of it:
I think The Brewer’s Nose application holds a lot of promise and is exceptionally easy to use. Some features of it will need to be expanded on to make it more appealing but it currently serves well as a quick source of knowledge on a range of beers and as an interesting way of sharing your thoughts about brews with your mates. It’s free to download so go get it and give it a try for yourself.

Guinness have embarked on a clever new venture aptly named The Blacklist.

The Blacklist is a website for all the Guinness fans out there to publicly celebrate their local pubs that are pouring beautiful pints and to leave honest feedback on them.
It is a risky endeavor by Guinness, and a first in the Australian brewing world, as Guinness is opening themselves up to potential criticism that their pints aren’t being poured perfectly. However, it is also a way for Guinness to identify where they can provide assistance and help put in measures to raise the standards.
As well as rating the quality of pints, another great thing about The Blacklist is that users are able to review and comment on their overall experience of heading down to their local. This will then allow people to read reviews and recommendations, and even search for the best cheeky mid-weeker, the best steak and the best live sports venue. So if you are looking for a place to grab a great pint and watch the footy with some mates, all you have to do is log on and The Blacklist will guide you to the right place.
The website is now live, so check it out:
http://blacklist.guinness.com.au
Also keep an eye out for the Guinness Blacklist app on iTunes, version 1.0 is currently available and it’s only 2.5MB:

In case you haven’t heard there is a regular magazine publication that’s all about the golden liquid and it’s called Beer & Brewer.

Beer & Brewer magazine was launched back in 2007 and is currently celebrating its 3rd birthday with the current issue. Included in this publication are many interesting articles and amongst them this magazine will (source : www.beerandbrewer.com):
• Help you plan a weekend away involving beer
• Tell you about upcoming events/festivals
• Feature the latest recipes to match to beers & cook with beer
• Show you how to get started in home brewing with tips, how to’s and recipes
• Feature local breweries
• Introduce you to new beers and where to try/buy them
• List all the latest industry news and awards
It also aims to increase the public’s knowledge and awareness of micro/speciality beers. I only recently picked up my first copy of this loaded publication and it made me wish I had done so sooner. It has everything a beer lover could want regardless of what you may or may not know about beer. Unfortunately Beer & Brewer is a seasonal publication, so you can expect only 4 issues a year, but remember this makes them worth the wait. The current issue is #13 and is the winter 2010 edition. A copy of this mag will cost you $7.95 ($9.95 for New Zealand) from your local newsagent but that’s if you can find it! I had to try about four different locations before I did. Another way to get your hands on a copy is to subscribe to it online at www.beerandbrewer.com I did this myself today, as it works out a lot cheaper than opposed to buying it in store. There are currently three Australian subscription options with two of them getting you free beer. Yes, I said free beer:
1 Year Australian Subscription $24.99
2 Year Australian Subscription $52.99 plus two FREE six-packs of Kirin beer
3 Year Australian Subscription $69.99 plus a FREE carton of Kirin beer.
To take advantage of this free Kirin offer you need to subscribe before 10th August 2010. The 3 year subscription is the best value in my opinion, plus it comes with a free case of Kirin so why not.
So if you’re after an interesting read or just after a new recipe to go with your latest brew get yourself a copy of this fantastic mag. There’s certainly no better time to do so!

Like most people I really enjoy a good coffee in the morning to get me going and ready for what the day holds ahead. Until recently it had never even crossed my mind to mix coffee with beer, but as per usual the clever brewers at Matilda Bay and Burleigh Brewing are one step ahead.

Matilda Bay have gotten the head start in this coffee infused race with the recent release of Longshot, a coffee-infused dark ale pictured above. I recently had the pleasure of trying this brew after buying a 4-pack from Dan Murphy’s. It was an impressive dark ale to say the least, so expect a full review of it shortly. The other contender for this niche market is the soon to be released Black Giraffe by Burleigh Brewing Co. Black Giraffe is a black coffee lager that is due for release this July. Burleigh Brewing have been expertly assisted in creating this brew by the team at Zarraffa’s Coffee and I for one can’t wait to try it. Our review of Black Giraffe is here.

With all these new infusions being released of late who knows what the future has in store for beer, but going off what the market is showcasing now it looks like stimulating times ahead especially for the coffee lovers out there.

Kopparberg Pear Cider is due to hit our shores this July, so you can expect to see it shortly at your local bottle-shop.

Kopparberg Pear Cider comes all the way from Sweden where its origins can be traced back to 1882. This cider is vat brewed and is fermented according to an old recipe using water sourced from the town of Kopparberg along with the finest quality pears available. The result is a pear cider which has 4.5% alcohol, is light in colour and has a refreshing fruity taste. Kopparberg is available in multiple sizes overseas, ranging from 330ml to 500ml bottles along with 330ml to 500ml cans. You can expect to pay about $5 for a 500ml bottle when it is released here, but until then you’ll just have to imagine what this unique pear cider will taste like.
