Holsten Premium is a lager that is brewed and bottled in the northern German port city of Hamburg by the Holsten Brauerei AG.Created from a masterful slow brewing process in Germany this beer is imported into Australia by McWilliam’s Wines.
Having a sweet taste and smell makes this beer appealing. When served cold it goes down smoother than a bald scalp and leaves your taste buds feeling refreshed and wanting more. Most of this would have a lot to do with the beer being brewed in strict accordance with the German Purity Law of 1516.The law stipulates in no uncertain terms that all ingredients used in the brewing process are natural and that no chemical additives or preservatives are permitted. This fortunately for us makes for a very smooth tasting beer and one that does not leave you with a head full of nails the morning after.
The downside of this beer is that it is not readily available in most pubs and clubs but you can purchase it from your local 1st Choice or Dan Murphy’s.If you’re after a relaxed night in and want a smooth beer that goes down well time after time, Holsten Premium is the beer for you.

Watch the official Peroni TV ad to help you decide.
This beer is something special. The first glass I poured for this review could have easily been mistaken for a glass of champagne had it not been poured into a pilsner glass. The beers colour is probably one of the lightest shades of yellow I have ever seen. It’s taste starts off bitter and dry and then transitions into a slightly fruity aftertaste. There isn’t much of a beer smell other than that given off by the hops.Peroni makes for an easy drinking beer.
Launched in 1964, Peroni Nastro Azzurro is a premium lager that is brewed and bottled in Italy. It is fully imported into Australia and can be found easily at most bottle shops and bars.As you can see from the TV ad above, Peroni is marketed as more than just a beer – it’s an icon. The beer was born out of the same inherent cultural beliefs that were depicted in Federico Fellini’s film La Dolce Vita, which has been recreated in the above TV advertisement.Peroni’s creators were more than happy to pay homage to Fellini’s great film.
La Dolce Vita is an Italian classic and so is this.

Well believe it or not Tooheys New has been bottled since 1976, the only difference is that it was brewed under a different name – Tooheys Draught.
Tooheys beers were created back in 1869 when two brothers from Ireland bought a brewery here in Australia.Tooheys Old Black Ale was one of their first creations and is still around to this day.Since 1869 the Tooheys brand has grown immensely and the results of this growth can easily be seen in most pubs and advertisements at many sporting events.Tooheys New is the official beer of the prestigious Melbourne Cup and is a proud supporter of the Australian Wallabies.Tooheys New is on tap at most local pubs and clubs and is also generally sold bottled or canned at these venues, making it one of the easiest beers to get your hands on.
This beer has a bitter taste to it, but don’t be turned off by this as it makes for a smooth, crisp drinking beer.It has a strong smell of hops and I believe you can nearly smell the bitterness lingering in the bottle.Light amber is the beer’s colour.A great advantage of this beer is that it is generally quite cheap to purchase, only the other day I saw a 6-pack going for $10 at Twin Towns RSL at Tweed Heads.
So if you’re after a cheap night or just want to give those taste buds a bitter twist, Tooheys New is the beer for you.
As most people are aware the German’s know how to make a good beer and this is one of them.
First brewed in 1873 in the small German city of Bremen and then officially launched in 1874.Becks beer was winning prizes and medals from a very early age. From its beginnings to this current day Becks has been brewed to the German Purity Law of 1516 – one of the oldest food regulations in the world.Unfortunately, the beer itself no longer comes from Germany and is now brewed and bottled here in Australia, but rest assured the same ingredients used in the German counterpart are used here.Becks beer tastes exceptionally crisp and dry making it an ideal drink for beer drinkers and non beer drinkers alike. There’s not much of a scent to Becks and the colour of the beer is light yellow. The beer comes in a green pop cap bottle with the traditional silver foil top label.
In continuing fashion from my last review I will show you one of my favourite Becks television advertisements:
To give you an idea of just how popular this beer is, the makers claim that over 50 Becks are consumed every minute, plus Becks are now sold in over 120 different countries worldwide. So next time you’re in the market for a German alternative might I suggest you try Becks, you won’t regret it – I didn’t!

Internationally renowned, this classic beer was conceived in Amsterdam back in 1863 by a young lad by the name of Gerard Adriaan Heineken.
Heineken is a premium lager that is delivered in the unmistakable green bottle with a red star on it.It has an exceptionally smooth taste and is very easy to drink probably due to the fact there are no lingering before or after tastes. The smell of Heineken is subtle with a pleasant sweet-smelling aroma. Its appearance is a light shade of yellow and let me tell you it is very easy to poor straight out of the bottle, which is a bonus if you are trying to impress.
‘The Haystack’ an old brewery in Denmark was the birthplace of Heineken. It was purchased by Gerard back in 1863 due to the fact the Dutch brewing industry was in serious decline, this meant he was able to purchase the brewery at a very affordable price which is amazing considering he was only 22 at the time – I myself am in envy of this fact!Since then the business has grown immensely among the international markets and is now known globally as the Heineken group. The Heineken group now sells more than 170 international beers, which is utterly amazing. They also have some very amusing advertising commercials, one can be seen below.
Heineken are currently having some really appealing promotions, such as winning tickets to the rugby world cup 2007 final in Paris. All you have to do is buy a 6-pack to enter and you could be off, I have mine in front of me.They also have a 5Litre draught keg which is available for purchase and from previous experience they are fantastic, especially for a long weekend away or a party – just remember to keep it chilled and drink the keg as soon as possible after opening it to preserve freshness.
So if you’re after a smooth drinking beer or just a chance to go to the rugby world cup final, I suggest you go down to your local bottle shop and pick yourself up a 6-pack of Heineken.
A new player on the beer market and aimed at the body conscious amongst us beer drinkers.Bondi Blonde is a low carbohydrate, full strength lager that has the added benefit of being preservative free.It contains one third the carbohydrates of your average full strength beer.
I have to admit that when I was told to try Bondi Blonde I was a bit hesitant, much to the disappointment of my mate who loves the beer, but I eventually succumbed to it & my friend and I bought a carton. It’s a smooth, light-tasting beer with no overwhelming flavours; it has a slightly sweet smell and a medium yellow appearance.I can tell you that a carton goes down very easily, as I found out first-hand a few weekends ago.Bondi blonde is 100% Australian owned and just as well, considering its name. The beer is bottled and brewed in Australia by the Bluetongue Brewery NSW.
Bondi Blonde has some great advertising campaigns going for it which include Miss Bondi Blonde 2007, Jamie Wright who was handpicked by Paris Hilton among others on New Year’s Day.
A great television ad for this beer is currently under review with some critics calling for it to be banned, why anyone would want to ban it I honestly don’t know – I myself love it!Check it out for yourself:
As they say in the ad ‘nothing goes down like a Bondi Blonde’ it’s a great beer and it’s great for the gut – good work Bluetongue!
Amsterdam Mariner premium lager is a fully imported beer that is brewed and bottled in Holland and let me tell you, it’s not a bad beer.It is currently retailing at my local BWS for $9.99 a six-pack.
This beer was introduced locally to Holland in 1994 and now gets exported to over 50 countries worldwide. It’s a full flavored lager with quite a strong taste of hops but not so overpowering that it stops you wanting more.I could happily drink a six-pack in one sitting. The alcohol content isn’t as strong as other premium lagers sitting at 4.8%.The beer itself has a medium yellow colour and smells slightly sweet.
Amsterdam Mariner is brewed by the Royal Grolsch Breweries in Holland which have almost four centuries of brewing knowledge. This beer has a 12 month shelf life which makes it good for any modern day bomb shelter that requires a ready supply of beer.I suggest you go out and start stocking up on this beer now, because at $9.99 a six-pack, it’s a steal!

‘World Acclaimed’ lager beer a title which it rightfully deserves – Tiger beer is currently available in over 59 different countries worldwide!Tiger beer is brewed exclusively in Asia and has been since 1932.Our Tiger beer here in Australia comes from the Asia Pacific Breweries in Singapore, where it is both brewed and bottled under license.
While some of us may be waiting for some sort of ROAR to come out of opening a bottle of Tiger I am sorry to disappoint you, but this will not happen. You will however be left with a crisp, creamy taste in your mouth once you have had your first sip.Tiger beer is a premium, fully imported lager beer. The beer itself has a sweet smell to it, a light yellow colour and a smooth creamy taste, which does not overpower the other qualities of the beer. For all those ‘die hard’ Aussies out there, you will be pleased to know that not everything in this beer comes from overseas.Tiger beer is brewed with Australian malt barley and more interestingly has its own exclusive strain of yeast that is cultured in Holland.Tiger beer has won many awards and accolades over the years, some of which can be seen on the bottles’ label. The label itself has also changed a number of times since the creation of this beer, 15 times to be exact – below is the original Tiger beer label and bottle:
This is a very satisfying lager beer that will leave you wanting more (and unfortunately I just drank my last one).It has all the characteristics of a great beer rolled into a stylish little package.I highly suggest you try one or two or even a sixpack if you haven’t done so already!

It’s probably about time for me to review an Australian beer and there just happened to be one in the fridge, Carlton Dry.
Carlton Dry has a taste true to its name, very dry and crisp – I suggest it always be served chilled. It is a full strength premium lager but is quite bland to the taste buds. It has a medium yellow appearance and a light fruity smell.
The Carlton brand was founded in 1864 where it began delivering its blend of beers with the help of the magnificent Clydesdale horse which is immortalized on every bottle. In 1907 Carlton Breweries joined forces with the Foster’s Brewing Company and through brand development are now part of the Fosters Group.
One of the main attractions towards this beer is that it is a low-carb alternative.Carlton Dry has 30% less carbohydrates than other full strength beers and will still give you the same kick that any other full strength beer usually would. This element combined with the crisp dry taste keeps it above the average. So if you’re in the market to watch the old beer gut and like the dry beer variety, I suggest you give Carlton Dry a go.
Carlsberg – ‘Probably the best beer in the world’ – I think not.
Although Carlsberg may be marketed as the best beer in the world, I certainly don’t believe it is.It has a very unique taste, creamy but yet crisp at the same time. Not being a fan of creamy beers probably doesn’t help but there’s something about Carlsberg that makes it different. It has a light yellow appearance and quite a distinctive sweet aroma.
Carlsberg brewing began back in 1847, in beautiful Denmark (Queen Mary’s new home). This is where the foundations were laid for what we now call the Carlsberg beer.Unfortunately, Carlsberg is no longer brewed and bottled in Denmark but rather under license by Forster’s here in Australia.
Even though I might not be an absolute fan of the Carlsberg beer I don’t believe it’s a bad brew and hence why it has an early mention on my blog. It’s a beer that can be comfortably consumed in quantity unlike its big brother – Carlsberg Elephant Beer, which I will review at a later time. Carlsberg should be always be served chilled to get the most out of it. Carlsberg is readily available from nearly every bottle store at minimal cost, the last six pack I bought even came with a free cooler bag which I use on a regular basis.Unfortunately, this notion is not the same for pubs, certain ones will serve it but not as a majority.Carlsberg goes well with most main meals especially pasta, which I enjoyed with it tonight.
Please feel free to go and try a Carlsberg and make your own mind up on whether it is the best beer in the world.
