Glossary

Below is a glossary of beer terms used regularly on our website.  Please have a look and make your self familiar with them, you may even learn a thing or two.

Ale

A type of beer that is made using top fermenting  yeast and generally has a fruity taste to it.

Barley

A cereal grain that is used as a base for making malt.  It’s important ingredient in brewing process and is used worldwide.

Beer

A fermented beverage made with the use of hops.  Archeological evidence suggests it dates back to 3000 B.C.

Bitter

There are two terms relating to this word:

1. Taste – A sharp, tangy, acidic taste that comes from the hops used in the brewing process.

2. Type – A type of beer that has a pronounced bitter flavour and is well-hopped.  Generally found in a draught beer.

Bock

Is a German word for strong beer.  It refers to a beer which brewed from barley malt and has a high alcohol content, generally in excess of 6% per volume.
